The Vice President of Business Development and Government Relations is a key player on a team of government relations professionals. Located in Ottawa, in effect and in practice, this individual will serve as Rolls-Royce’s “ external face ,” responsible for building relationships between all Rolls-Royce business units and the Canadian Federal Government, its Departments and Agencies, the Canadian Forces, the international diplomatic community (particularly the British High Commission and the United States Embassy), key industry and trade associations (Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC), Canadian Association of Defence & Security Industries (CADSI), Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) among others), major Canadian-based Industry partners (particularly on critical Defence programs), and, increasingly with Provincial Government Departments and Agencies as Rolls-Royce’s strategic focus on nuclear and other sustainable power opportunities further develop.

Necessarily broad in scope, the activities of the ideal candidate include advocating on a broad range of issues, policies and programs of importance to Rolls-Royce.  Also, given that the candidate must represent and act on behalf of Rolls-Royce businesses which are not located in Canada, as the title implies, this role is a combination of government relations and business development activities.  Importantly, the ideal candidate needs to be adroit and effective in dealing with senior-level political, military, departmental, diplomatic and business representatives. Effective collaboration with Rolls-Royce colleagues and businesses outside of Canada (particularly the U.S. and the U.K.) is critically important in this position.

From an organizational perspective, this position reports into the President of Rolls-Royce Canada (RRC) and functionally links into our North American Government Relations team headquartered in Washington D.C. as well as to our Global Government Relations team headquartered in London, U.K.

The incumbent will:

  • Build and maintain relationships while serving as Rolls-Royce North America (RRNA) senior corporate representative to the Canadian government and its key agencies, especially the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

  • Succinctly and capably translate Rolls-Royce technical capabilities, product offerings and market opportunities for defence applications.

  • Monitor all stages of projects for politically important government business and serve as a resource for the dissemination of information to Canadian government officials.

  • Monitor activities of relevant agencies and committees to secure additional funding/sales opportunities where possible.

  • Advise and support our company in the areas of public policy and corporate governance.

  • Advise RRC and RRNA senior leadership, program managers and offer strategies for advancing Rolls-Royce’s priorities in the various provinces and territories.

The ideal candidate must be able to:

  • Identify and track legislation and regulations that impact Rolls-Royce priorities.

  • Develop and execute strategic plans to meet Rolls-Royce goals.

  • Compose, edit, and transmit advocacy documents such as issue summaries, white papers, op-eds, and policy alerts.

  • Develop, schedule and attend meetings and communication opportunities with Congress and selected agency officials .

  • Independently foster business development opportunities to support Rolls-Royce objectives.

  • Must be able to travel domestically.

  • B.S. or B.A. required; advanced degree preferred (Masters in related field).
